First Call for Abstracts

INVITATION AND FIRST CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The International Association of Military Geosciences invites you to the 12th International Conference on Military Geosciences, Stellenbosch, 18 to 23 June 2017, and the Post Conference Field Excursion, 24 – 30 June 2017.

The theme of the conference is “The scope, reach and impact of Military Geosciences”. With this deliberately broad theme the organisers aim to host a conference celebrating the diversity of research avenues explored by Military Geoscientists, as well as the impact this research has on military activities in the broadest possible sense. Therefor we (once again intentionally) steer away from tying participants to predetermined topics. On our website we did, however included a list of topics from previous conferences to help new participants to assess the scope of military geo-scientific work. For more information please visit the conference website at http://www.icmg12.co.za/

INFORMATION

The five-day conference will take place at the picturesque Lanzerac Wine Estate (http://www2.lanzerac.co.za) in the scenic university town of Stellenbosch, about 50 kilometres from Cape Town. The Lanzerac Wine Estate can trace its history back to 1692 when Governor Simon van der Stel granted the farm in the Jonkershoek Valley to Isaac Schrijver and three freed slaves.

The conference will host military geoscientists (academics and students) from around the world and feature the following:

  • Presentations from distinguished international and South African scholars and researchers.
  • Field trips: Attendees will explore the rich cultural and physical geography of the Cape Winelands and the Cape Town metropolitan region through informative excursions during the conference. This will include a full day visit to the Cape Peninsula, including Cape Point, as well as a half day excursion to the Castle – the oldest existing European building in South Africa.
  • A welcoming function on Sunday evening and dinner on Monday evening (all lunches and coffee breaks are included).
  • A Conference banquet.

The six-day post-conference field excursion will include the following:

  • Return flights from Cape Town International to King Shaka International in Durban.
  • All transport, meals and accommodation.
  • Visit the Drakensberg – the scenic escarpment dividing the coastal province of KwaZulu – Natal from the interior.
  • Visits to four of the pivotal battles fought on South African soil, as well as viewing the Big Five.

The last date for abstract submission is 19 May 2017. Final acceptance is contingent on registration and payment. Send abstracts to Hennie Smit at ICMG@ma2.sun.ac.za.

More information about the conference, preliminary scientific programme, timeline and key deadlines for registration and submission of abstracts, etc. can be found at the conference website. Alternatively, to request more specific information e-mail Hennie Smit or Jacques Bezuidenhout at ICMG@ma2.sun.ac.za.

Accommodation

Different modes of conference accommodation are available.

The dedicated conference hotel will be the Lanzerac hotel at the conference venue. Delegates staying over in this hotel will have the conference venue on the premises and will be able to walk to the conference venue.  A bus will collect delegates from this hotel to transport them to other functions/excursions. Please contact Suzanne van Wyk at (banqueting2@lanzerac.co.za) and stipulate that you will be attending the ICMG 2017 conference. She will then give you a special price for the duration of the conference.

The Stellenbosch Hotel is situated approximately 2 km from the conference venue. Bus transport will be available to and from this hotel to the conference venue on a daily basis.  A bus will also collect delegates from this hotel to transport them to other functions/excursions.  Please use the reference ICMG 2017 when booking accommodation to qualify for the special price for conference delegates.

Stellenbosch is both a university town and a tourist destination and small hotels, bed and breakfast establishments and self-catering accommodation facilities to suit any budget abound. Prices start from as little as R140 per person per night (10 US Dollar, 9 Euro or 7 British Pound) to more than R3000 per room (215 US Dollar, 187 Euro or 157 British Pound). Unfortunately it will not be possible to transport delegated from these establishments to the conference venue and back, so delegates using this option must keep in mind that they must get to the conference venue, or Stellenbosch Hotel on their own.  Once there, they can also make use of the bus transport to the conference venue and to attend the various functions/excursions.

Please be advised that accommodation at the conference hotels will be available on a first come, first served basis and that it is advisable to book as early as possible.

Should you have trouble securing accommodation, please contact the organisers at this email address.
